About Newman University

Newman University, or NU for short, is a coeducational Catholic liberal arts university in Wichita, which is the county seat of Sedgwick County, situated in the US state of Kansas, having a population estimated at a number of more than 366 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 51st largest city in USA and the most populous city in the state.

Newman University was established by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, who opened a girls school in Wichita in 1902, and a women's junior college in 1932, known as Sacred Heart College, which was reorganized into a four year liberal arts college, in 1958, that became co-educational 7 years later. The institution's name was changed to Kansas Newman College in 1973, its current name being adopted in 1998.

Athletics

The athletic teams at NU are known as the Jets, who compete in NCAA Division II, since July 2006, in various sports for both men and women, the university becoming part of the Heartland Conference in the fall 2006 season. Among the sports in which the Jets compete, there are: baseball, basketball, bowling, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball.
